The risks of having a scan are carefully weighed against the benefits. An ultrasound scan is among the safest of all scans as it uses sound waves, rather than radiation. For this reason it is used to monitor unborn babies during pregnancy. MRI scans are also considered safer than many other scans as they use magnetic fields, however they are not suitable for people with a pacemaker as they can interfere with their normal operation. Other types of scans, such as CT scans, X-rays and fluoroscopy use radiation, occasionally an alternative scan may be suggested, particularly in younger people or pregnant women, this is usually only an issue if the area to be scanned includes the baby. We are happy to discuss any specific questions you may have.
Please refer to your appointment letter for details of how to prepare for your scan as preparation will vary according to the type of scan you are having. If you are having a gastrointestinal scan, for example, you may need to avoid eating and drinking on the day of your scan.
